02 Dec 2020

Maria Raphael, Privacy Minders’ founder and Director/Partner at the law firm, I.Frangos & Associates LLC, was elected President of the European Association of Data Protection Professionals (EADPP) at the general assembly’s elections held on November 27, 2020.

Ms. Raphael, President of the Cyprus Branch of EADPP, was elected by a strong majority, collecting 75% of the total votes.

The EADPP, which currently numbers about 1.200 members, was founded in November 2018 and is a European, non-profit organization based in Maastricht (Netherlands). The Association was set up to represent the personal data professionals applying European Law, both inside and outside the European Union. One of the Association’s main priorities is the creation of a recognized European certification scheme for data protection professionals - which is expected to be available to stakeholders in 2021.

EADPP’s activities seek to advance the data protection profession by providing training opportunities for professionals and mutual cooperation, and by representing professionals both at national level, before the competent authorities of the Member States, and at European level before the institutions of the European Union.
"It is a great honor for me to take over the Presidency of the EADPP in these critical times, when the right to privacy is severely restricted in order to safeguard and protect the public goods of life and public health, while personal data professionals are called under unprecedented circumstances to make delicately and lawfully balance these rights", said Ms. Raphael, in her speech at the General Assembly, following her election.
The Board of the Cyprus Branch expressed their deep satisfaction for the recognition of Ms. Raphael and the Cyprus professionals in the privacy field, and wished her success in the work she has to perform during her two-year term.
